However, the origins of the name run much deeper. A key measurement when sailing is the speed of the ship. To calculate speed, knots were tied at intervals along a rope. When the rope was thrown off the stern of a ship, sailors would count the number of knots passing through their hands in thirty seconds. To ensure that the rope would hold fast in the water as the ship moved forward, a wooden log was tied to the end.
